All young musicians are invited to become members of the Musical Arts Youth Orchestra.  Becoming a member requires commitment to practice your music, to listen carefully to your conductor or coach, and to have fun playing different genres of music including orchestral works, jazz and chamber music. Interested in New Member auditions held in the spring and in early fall?  Sign-up for an audition.

Anyone can try out MAYO for up to three weeks.  After that, full tuition is required.

Remember MAYO offers generous financial aid packages for anyone who requires it but you must fill out the financial aid request form with a $50 annual family participation fee. 

Other Members
Ivy Tech musicians will follow requirements as directed by their institution.
Boys & Girls members receive services at no charge.

New Members:  Have you played with MAYO before?  If not, you need to schedule a new member audition.  These auditions take place in the spring and again in early Fall.

Returning Member: *** POLICY CHANGE *** The Music Director has requested that all musicians schedule an audition time for the 2011-12 season. If you are unable to make a scheduled audition (registration page), use the audition interest form below OR email info@mayomusic.org.

Onsite Auditions:  MAYO travels to different regions and holds auditions in cooperation with those school districts. On the list for this season is Bedford North Lawrence, Martinsville High, Green County, and Ellettsville.  Look back for more information on when these auditions will be held.

Anyone can join MAYO during the mid-season. Auditions take place prior to rehearsal on Mondays at the rehearsal venue. Please let the Orchestra Manager know you are planning on attending by sending an email to orchestramanager@mayomusic.org. 

POD Membership:  If you are located in a region further than 30 minutes from the rehearsal venue, you may qualify to participate as a POD member.  POD members will have a primary coach in the city (or near the city) in which they live or required to work with their private teacher.  All POD members are required to audition for the conductor and must attend a minimum of 3 rehearsals with the large ensemble.

Auditions will be held for:

Strings: Violin, Viola, Cello, Bass, Harp
Woodwinds: Flute, Piccolo, Oboe (English horn), Clarinet, Bass Clarinet, Bassoon
Brass: Horn, Trumpet, Trombone, Tuba
Percussion
Piano

Audition Requirements:

Solo
One piece of the applicant's choice with a contrasting movement from a sonata or a concerto that demonstrates the musical and technical abilities of the candidate.  Accompaniment is not available.

Scales
As appropriate to applicant's instrument and level.  Choose scales that show your playing to your optimum advantage.  Scales should be played at a moderate tempo, with any desired articulation and bowing.

Excerpts (for Seating Auditions only - held in the Fall)
Excerpts are available online. Excerpts are part of the audition process for seating placement in the fall (not part of the new member auditions) for wind and brass players.  Excerpts are standard and do not necessarily reflect the repertoire being performed for the season.

Location:
Musical Arts Youth Orchestra Office - 726 N. Walnut Street (11th and Walnut) near the Digital Arts office. 

Adjudicators:
The Musical Arts Youth Orchestra Music Director and possibly other area professionals will listen to the auditions and determine placement in the orchestra.

Jazz auditions will be held during the first few meetings of the jazz session.  All interested students should contact the Jazz Director, Ben Mathews. NEW THIS YEAR: Register online for the open sessions.

All jazz students must complete a MAYO registration form in addition to the Jazz Supplemental Audition form.
