Music Director Lauren Bernofsky has served as Conductor of the MAYO Symphony Orchestra since the fall of 2013. She is recognized internationally as a composer, and one of her specialties is writing for young musicians. She has composed over thirty works for student orchestras; these pieces are played at conferences, school concerts, and music festivals across the United States as well as internationally. Her music is available from The FJH Music Company, Hal Leonard, Grand Mesa Music, Balquhidder Music, Fatrock Ink, Theodore Presser, Alfred Publishing, and Boosey & Hawkes.
Besides conducting and composing, Lauren Bernofsky is a professional violinist, having performed with numerous orchestras and chamber groups in Indiana, Florida, and throughout New England. She has taught violin lessons in her private studio and several school systems in the Boston area. As a guest clinician/conductor, she has worked with students in Massachusetts, New Jersey, Georgia, Florida, and Indiana.
She holds a master's degree in composition from the New England Conservatory and a doctorate in composition from Boston University. She is a former professor at the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University.

MAYO Rock Band Director Nathan Dillon has the experience, understanding and enthusiasm that enables him to provide excellent musical skills to students. He attended the Jacobs School for Jazz and Classical guitar performance before leaving for New York and Brooklyn Academy of Music in 2002 where he also studied guitar. Working and touring with music acts ranging from country and rock to chamber music and world music took him away from academia but ready to tackle being a music professional. Over the last decade Nathan has worked in some of the finest schools in the US including Bank Street Lab School in New York City as well as Catherine Cook School and Nettelhorst Elementary in Chicago. He is Founder and Director of Everybody Rocks, which brings music classes to people of all walks of life throughout Chicagoland and southern Indiana. As MAYO grows with new members, our musical horizons will grow as well. Nathan will help both of these aspect of MAYO to thrive.
MAYO Outreach Coordinator and String Specialist Nicole Moody loves collaborating in the arts and helping young people do this with excellence. While maintaining a music studio in Bloomington, Renaissance Arts Studio, Nicole is the string coach for MAYO and coordinates the MAYO/Boys and Girls Club violin program. Well-versed in various musical styles including jazz, fiddle, classical, and contemporary, Nicole arranges and performs music for the violin, viola, voice, piano, and small ensembles with local musicians. She has received degrees in Violin and Voice Performance from the IU Jacobs School of Music with a minor in Drama from the IU Department of Theatre and Drama. Nicole Moody has worked under the guidance of pedagogues such as Mimi Zweig, Brenda Brenner, and Julie Lyonn Lieberman and studied vocal performance with Scharmal Shrock, and violin performance with Ik-wan Bae, Federico Agostini, and Albert Hirtz.
Executive Director Julia Shannon has had a passion for fostering youth ensembles and music since her own experiences in youth orchestras as a violin student and teacher in Texas. After relocating to Bloomington, she sought out a local youth-oriented music program and quickly became involved, first as a volunteer & board member before joining the team as Executive Director. Julia has a master's degree in Arts Administration from Indiana University and a bachelor's degree in Violin Performance from Texas Tech University in Lubbock, TX. She also serves as the Program & Operations Coordinator for the Arts & Humanities Council at Indiana University. In her spare time, Julia plays violin in the Bloomington-based tango ensemble Tamango.
