The MAYO jazz ensemble presented their Fall Colors concert and clinic at the Monroe County Public Library on Tuesday, November 13th. Nearly 50 elementary and school aged children and families participated in this interactive concert / clinic experience.
October 30, you can listen to the spooktacular sounds of MAYO Jazz students at Cafe Django in Bloomington. From 6:45-7:15 pm, the combo will jam with members from Jazz from Bloomington. Show your spirit and stop by for a quick listen and bite to eat. MAYO has moved to a new location in Bloomington. If you want to stop by and visit, you will have to make an appointment! Latest report indicates they have successfully performed ANT and moving on to the next piece. Congrats to all the young players. Look to hearing the ensemble perform on December 7th at City Hall. MAYO Jazz performed at the Taste of Bloomington in cooperation with Jazz from Bloomington. Special thanks to Neil Ferris for coordinating this effort. Missed the ensemble? This year, MAYO produced three concerts in the "Elements" season that included works by Beethoven, Haydn, and Rossini at the IU Alumni Hall on November 23, 2011 and at the Ivy Tech Waldron Arts Center Auditorium on February 26, 2012. Ending the season with a "bang" is the MAYO Jazz Combo performing a family-friendly hour-long session to celebrate National Jazz Month at the Ivy Tech Waldron Arts Center Auditorium on Monday, April 30 from 7-8 pm. MAYO performed two preview concerts with an educational focus at the Monroe County Public Library in February and in April. Both preview concerts allowed children of all ages to experience music first hand by holding a violin or electric guitar. This program will continue in 2012-13. Children at the Boys & Girls Clubs in Ellettsville and Bloomington received lessons and classes in violin and beginner jazz. These programs were well attended and held in both the fall and spring. Well done girls and boys! We hope to see you in the MAYO ranks soon. The annual concerto competition will be held on Saturday, November 12th at 2 pm at Indiana University. Any young musicians is invited to try out! The winner(s) will perform with the MAYO Symphony at the February and/or May concerts. More information can be found on our website here. The Boys & Girls Club of Bloomington and Ellettsville and the Musical Arts Youth Orchestra announce a unique partnership for the 2011-12 season. This unique partnership allows MAYO to provide quality music making opportunities through an in-kind gift of rehearsal space. MAYO will provide musical training to young musicians through the after-school program. Don't miss out on the hype and buzz for this new season -- Maestro Paul Ghun Kim has plans for preparing all musicians for an exceptional performance. Please welcome our newes board member, Susan Moses. Susan Moses is Co-Director of the String Academy and leads the cello branch. Susan earned her degrees with the highest honors at Indiana and Yale Universities before completing her studies at the renowned Jascha-Heifetz-Gregor Piatigorsky Master Classes at the University of Southern California. She was awarded a Ford Foundation Prize and has performed throughout the world in recital, with orchestra and as the solo violoncellist of the celebrated I SOLISTI VENETI. She presently heads the cello department of the String Academy at Indiana University, has been on the faculty of Oberlin College and represents the United States in International cello competitions.
