Ben Mathews was raised in southern California, close to the up and- coming rock and roll scene of the Los Angeles suburbs. He began to cut his musical teeth at an early age on the piano and alto saxophone, and turned his attention to the guitar at age 13. Pursuing mostly rock & roll and pop music through high school, Ben quickly excelled at contemporary styles and by age 17 became known as a reliable player and a desirable teacher in his area.
In college Ben was exposed to classical and jazz guitar, both of which he developed a love for, and studied in great depth. While himself studying guitar with Corey Christiansen, he continued to develop his own private studio. Having gained significant experience and repute as a guitar and bass teacher for high-school aged youth, Ben was hired in 2008 by The Music School, a Juilliard partner, where he served as an instructor until beginning his current studies at Indiana University.
Ben exhibits a passion for education. He has consistently demonstrated an ability to connect with youth in a way that opens their minds to new perspectives on music and its performance. His students quickly develop a deep love for the music they play, as well as a drive to excel and to exceed their own perceived ability.
