Michael Nearpass Jazz & Composer Clinic

MAYO Jazz musicians will participate in a special clinic with composer Michael Nearpass. This event takes place Tuesday, March 19 at 6-8pm in Music Annex Building 006.

This will be an exciting event; Michael will be bringing in some of his own compositions which have been performed by groups at Indiana University, the University of Illinois, Indiana State University, Terre Haute North Vigo High School, and Woodrow Wilson Middle School.  Michael has performed with ensembles such as the Steve Allee Big Band, the Buselli-Wallarab Jazz Orchestra, and the John Vander Gheynst Jazz Orchestra, and he also was a finalist in the 2013 ASCAP Young Jazz Composers Competition.

MAYO musicians and friends are invited to attend this event!  Make sure you bring in any pieces you've been working on and have some questions ready for our clinician!

Jazz Concert at Cafe Django

Picture
MAYO jazz performed at the Jazz from Bloomington jam session Tuesday, January 29th at Cafe Django.  After their performance, students were able to work with guest artist Matt MacDougall on various aspects of playing in a group, improvising and arranging tunes on the fly.

MAYO would like to thank Matt for joining us and sharing his talents, Cafe Django for hosting the event and Jazz from Bloomington for organizing it.  The jam session provides students with a chance to apply the concepts they learn in rehearsals, and the monthly performance is a great opportunity for MAYO students to practice their skills on stage.

Happy New Year! Celebrate MLK Day with Concert, January 22, at Meadowood.

MAYO Jazz will start off the new year with a performance at Meadowood Retirement Home.

This concert will focus on the music recorded by the Miles Davis Quintet in the late 1950's.  Inspired by Ahmed Jamal, Davis began using popular tunes of the day as vehicles for improvisation.  These tunes have become known as jazz standards, and are known by jazz musicians all around the world.  They are classic songs that frequently are called to be played at impromptu jam sessions, and are a perennial favorite among jazz artists to record.

DATE:  Tuesday, January 22, 2013
PLACE: Meadowood Retirement Home
TIME: 7:00 pm

Open to the community.

No Charge.

FALL COLORS AN INTERACTIVE EXPERIENCE

The MAYO jazz ensemble presented their Fall Colors concert and clinic at the Monroe County Public Library last Tuesday.  Families with children were treated not only to a performance but also an interactive presentation about the instruments, their roles in the group and how playing together requires listening.  Afterwards, the attendees were invited up on the stage to see and play the instruments themselves.  MAYO jazz would like to thank Mary Frasier and the MCPL for holding the event.  It was an enjoyable concert and all the participants had fun and learned abut music.

MAYO ANNOUNCES FALL COLORS AT THE MCPL

Bring your friends and family to a free concert on Tuesday, November 13th at the Monroe County Public Library from 6:30-8 pm.

ANNOUNCING MAYO ROCK

MAYO Rock is similar to the jazz program in age group, instrumentation and semester format but differ in style and repertoire.  Depending on group specifics, members will perform a variety of PG-friendly songs: think “Mustang Sally,” “Should I Stay or Should I Go,” “Twist and Shout,” and other songs you might hear a high school pep band cover.

The curriculum will focus on repertoire, applied theory/ear training, song format, and historical background.  Rehearsals would focus on learning songs by ear and charting them out in an organized binder, learning about the common chord progressions and theory fundamentals behind the music, performing the repertoire from memory, and learning the background of the artist/group that recorded it.

This program also includes topics on promotion, stage presence, and music business.

Students will be involved in the branding, promotion and business of their group.  They will choose a band name and contribute to poster design.  “Promotion day” will be offered where MAYO Rock students go to local businesses on Kirkwood to meet and greet with flyers promoting concerts.  Members can also expect to record a demo (using a handheld recorder), put together a publicity kit, and receive guidance through the gig-booking process.

This program will create a focused and mentored approach to the high school garage band experience.
