International Youth Music Festival
The International Musical Arts Youth Orchestra Festival is a collaboration between the Musical Arts Youth Orchestra and various other youth-oriented music groups, including the Indiana University String Academy, the Hong Kong International School, the Matan Arts and Culture Project, and the Keshet Eilon Music Center in Israel.
Young musicians from France, Hong Kong, Austria, Germany, China and Israel have arrived in Bloomington, Indiana and have stayed with families of MAYO and IU String Academy members, attending rehearsals, concerts, and master classes. They join with the MAYO orchestra in a gala culminating concert.
The iMAYO 2009 International Youth Orchestra Festival, held in Bloomington April 12-20, 2009 was a huge success. Young players from Austria, France, and Germany, as well as from California and Louisiana and from the Indianapolis area, joined colleagues in Bloomington for a week of rehearsals, concerts and master classes. They performed chamber concerts in Bloomington and Indianapolis, and a full orchestra concert at Bloomington’s IU Auditorium on April 19. Audience enthusiasm was at an all-time high, as was the enthusiasm shown onstage. Among the outstanding pedagogues who offered their expertise were violinists Mauricio Fuks, Alexander Kerr, Barnabas Kelemen, Jose Valencia, and Michel Zaitzeff; cellists Thomas Loewenheim, Susan Moses, and Janos Starker; bassist Bruce Bransby; hornist Jeff Nelson; trumpeter Albert Lilly, and bassoonist Catherine Marchese.
