ART THROUGH INTERPRETATION

Art through interpretation project incorporates working with students from Grades 1-6 and offering an enrichment experience for non-musicians.  This year's project will focus on jazz through time.  The partnering school if provided with a kit that includes a CD of music that will be performed at an upcoming concert and a guideline sheet of some things to think about when listening to the music. The art teacher guides his/her students to design artwork that expressed the feeling from the music.  MAYO will showcase the pieces of work at a local concert that features the music from the CD.  The concert is free.

JAZZY TUNES AT THE LIBRARY

Enjoy a free concert at the Monroe County Public Library featuring incredible music. A unique experience awaits your middle-school aged child who will get to try a jazz instrument, receive informational material, and have a chance to meet the musicians.  Free.

REGIONAL TOURS AND PERFORMANCES

The MAYO ensembles have performed in concert venues in Bloomington, Indiana including the Waldron Arts Auditorium, Buskirk-Chumley Theatre, the Indiana University Auditorium, Bloomington High School North, Waldron Firebay, and Bloomington High School South.

In addition to local concerts, MAYO members join other public school music programs for joint concerts.  These regional performances include the cities of Ellettsville, Bedford, and Indianapolis, Indiana.  MAYO members have also participated in podium exchanges with other youth orchestras including the Terre Haute Youth Symphony, Greater Northern Youth Symphony of Cincinnati and the Louisville Youth Orchestra.

Outreach performances and programs take place at many venues around Indiana.  These performances are offered at no charge and benefit a specific population.  Performances and programs have been held in cooperation with such organizations as the Boys & Girls Club, Meadowwood Retirement Community, Indiana Museum of Art, and the International School of Indiana.

In 2012-13 season, join MAYO for a field trip experience to the Palladium to listen to Chick Corea / Gary Burton. This is a special event you will not want to miss.  Email info@mayomusic.org to get more information.

International Youth Music Festival

The International Musical Arts Youth Orchestra Festival is a collaboration between the Musical Arts Youth Orchestra and various other youth-oriented music groups, including the Indiana University String Academy, the Hong Kong International School, the Matan Arts and Culture Project, and the Keshet Eilon Music Center in Israel.

Young musicians from France, Hong Kong, Austria, Germany, China and Israel have arrived in Bloomington, Indiana and have stayed with families of MAYO and IU String Academy members, attending rehearsals, concerts, and master classes. They join with the MAYO orchestra in a gala culminating concert.

The iMAYO 2009 International Youth Orchestra Festival, held in Bloomington April 12-20, 2009 was a huge success. Young players from Austria, France, and Germany, as well as from California and Louisiana and from the Indianapolis area, joined colleagues in Bloomington for a week of rehearsals, concerts and master classes. They performed chamber concerts in Bloomington and Indianapolis, and a full orchestra concert at Bloomington’s IU Auditorium on April 19. Audience enthusiasm was at an all-time high, as was the enthusiasm shown onstage.

Among the outstanding pedagogues who offered their expertise were violinists Mauricio Fuks, Alexander Kerr, Barnabas Kelemen, Jose Valencia, and Michel Zaitzeff; cellists Thomas Loewenheim, Susan Moses, and Janos Starker; bassist Bruce Bransby; hornist Jeff Nelson; trumpeter Albert Lilly, and bassoonist Catherine Marchese.

MAYO Classical members can be nominated to participate in a new international music festival with former music director Thomas Loewenheim in California. Look for the announcement in late Fall. Interested? Email info@mayomusic.org.
